“Only after it’s a mountain of bodies bagged do we think to raise a flag and call the mistake by a different name, because one downfall times a thousand has got to mean something. It needs its own brand, some point to all the sacrifice.”

–Barbara Kingsolver, Demon Copperhead

Welcome! My name is Barbara Lopez, and this is my portfolio for the course Connections and Conflicts I/II, otherwise known as Humes! There is no particular way in which you should navigate my page but there is context you should have before you begin reading:

The theme of Humes for the Fall 2024 semester is “Coming to Terms With Justice,” and the theme for the Spring 2025 semester is “Negotiating Justice.” Within the readings, lectures, and documentaries we have explored I have found myself drawn to elements of loss and abandonment. How much, and what, is sacrificed in the endeavor for justice, community, or our mere happiness? What is the role of autonomy in all of this? To me, this is specific to what the individual gives up conditionally, willingly or by force.

Acknowledgements

I give my thanks and appreciation to all of the professors in the Humanities Program: Dr. Boyer, Dr. Bory, Dr. Pyle, Dr. Lipsker, Dr. Jankovic, and Dr. Bowles for their passionate and engrossing lectures. The fellows deserve as much gratitude for dedicating themselves to assisting this year’s humesters; specifically thank you to Katriel Sanders (Fall semester AT) and Gebryan Arciniega-Gutierrez (Spring semester AT). All of the countless fellows and classmates who assisted me with my portfolio, you are also deeply appreciated. Thank you to Dr. Pyle and Dr. Lipsker for their invaluable work as my fall semester section leaders. Finally, thank you to my Spring semester section leaders Dr. Boyer and Dr. Bory (and their assistance in the research portion of the course).
